Energy Cleansing and Grounding Techniques

As we know, everything is made up of energy. When you walk into a building or a room after a fight, you can sense the tension. The true love of soulmates is a felt perception, it is tangible to others. Joy is infectious and misery loves company as they say. As perceptive beings, we can easily pick up on the energy of people and places around us (whether consciously or not).

Just like we clean our bodies every day, it is also recommended to spiritually cleanse regularly as well.

All of us are empathic and sensitive to a certain degree, some of us are just more energetically sensitive than others. Practicing good spiritual hygiene goes hand in hand with emotionally regulating practices for me.

I would personally suggest doing some form of small energy cleanse (even just an aura sweep or reclaiming your energy at the end of the day) every day if possible. If you are engaged in the healing or spiritual arts, this can involve more complex rituals (and if that is the case, you likely already take a number of steps to psychically protect yourself, ground and centre your energy, and cleanse already).

This can be the difference between becoming energetically burnt out or not, and as a sensitive person, some of these tips have been utterly life changing for me!

Read on for some of my favourite energy cleansing and grounding techniques:

Energy Cleansing

What is energy? Energy is the tangible sensations that we can feel, the vibes we pick up on. If we think of ourselves like a sponge, throughout the day we can absorb the energy from the people and things around us. At the end of the day, energy cleansing is like wringing ourselves out and coming back to ourselves. For those of us who are more sensitive, regularly practicing small energy cleanses throughout the day can be particularly beneficial (especially before entering large crowds, engaging in spiritual practices etc.).

The energy field of the heart is particularly powerful, in fact:

“The magnetic field produced by the heart is more than 100 times greater in strength than the field generated by the brain and can be detected up to 3 feet away from the body, in all directions” - HeartMath Institute.

For those of us that are more energetically sensitive and/or work in the healing fields, it can be easy to become overwhelmed with our sometimes frenetic modern lifestyle. Using simple, everyday techniques, we can allow our energetic cups to remain fuller for longer:

Energy clearing + protection tips

1. Smoke cleansing - This is an age old practice used in many cultures across the world, popularised in recent years by Indigenous American “smudging” with white sage. To avoid cultural appropriation and the over-harvesting of this plant, connect to a herb that your ancestors used (it will be much stronger for you this way too). In Italy, we typically used rosemary, lavender, and sage. Incense is also popularly used either as sticks or in censer burners with charcoal. Open all the windows and fan the smoke with intention, asking the spirits of the home to help you cleanse it, including your body. If you are sensitive to smoke, making an aura mist is powerful too!

2. Aura sweeps - This is a super powerful way to give yourself a quick cleanse using just your hands, passing them over your body and visualising any debris flying off. You can also use a selenite wand or lemon cut in half (my favourite)! Crystals for protection after include Black Tourmaline and Smokey Quartz, read more here.

3. Salt - Salt is one of the most powerfully cleansing and protective ingredients and can be used in a myriad of ways. You can place a bowl of salt or saltwater by your bedside as you sleep, asking it to remove any negativity, and flushing it down the toilet in the morning. You can put some in talismans, amulets, or protection pouches. You can sprinkle some in the four corners of a room and sweep it away anticlockwise from back to front of the house.

4. Water - Often you will be working with the elements, are none are more cleansing than Water. A salt bath or plain bath can work wonders, as can the sea or rivers, streams, waterfalls, and lakes. I do a daily shower ritual where I pour some salt on the floor and ask it and the water to help “absorb, cleanse, clear, and remove any lingering, negative, or stagnant energy and that does not belong to me and wash it far away”. You can even do it just while washing your hands!

5. Air - Moving on to the next element, Air is also powerfully cleansing. Simply opening all the windows does wonders for changing the energy of your home. Stepping outside on a windy day or going to a place you know is windy and asking the wind to dust away the cobwebs is highly effective. To this effect, breathwork is also powerful for changing stagnant energy, and can also be combined with aura sweeps, literally like blowing away the dust. Sound also comes into this, bells are a popular method.

6. Fire - Next comes fire, a purifying element. You can light a candle and ask the flame to help you purge and release any stagnancy, it is particularly effective to write down what is weighing on you and (safely) burning it with tweezers. Drop the ashes in a bowl of saltwater and flush it down the toilet. Don’t forget to thank all the elements for their assistance! You can also sunbathe and dance/shake to activate the Fire element within you and remove stagnancy.

7. Earth - This element is the most grounding but being in nature is also powerfully cleansing and regenerative. You can ask Mother Earth to help cleanse you when you are in nature, preferably barefoot. I like to perform a roots visualisation daily to help anchor my energetic chord to the centre of the Earth. You can also eat grounding foods and drinks such as root vegetables and tea to help centre yourself. Hematite is a particularly grounding crystal.

8. Visualisation - As any manifestation coach will tell you, visualisation is integral to achieving your goal. A cord cutting visualisation is useful if you feel more tethered to a specific thing, but I also like to do a daily one during my meditation practice as a generic freeing. Another extremely effective technique I use is to envision myself filling up with a bright golden light and then enveloping myself in a protective bubble. You can visualise any colour to amplify its properties, sometimes it might be a solid lead bubble, other times it might be a reflective mirror, sometimes it might be made of magic and able to only let in what you wish. A Chakra colour visualisation is also highly useful, particularly the Root Chakra for grounding (red).

9. Intention/Affirmation - And just like any witch will tell you, your intention is everything. Simply state that your energy is cleansed and it is done, you are powerful and own yourself! One of the most powerful ways for clearing up any meddled energy is saying your FULL name either out loud or in your head three times, this is a tip I learnt from the wonderful Jessica Lanyadoo and added a simple incantation such as the one above in tip 4. You can feel into your core/stomach as you do so.

10. Energy work - Finally, if you have Reiki training or are practiced in any other energy healing, you can of course perform daily tune ups on yourself (which you likely do already)! If not, you can also simply rest your hands wherever they feel comfortable on your body and envision a bright light emanating from them, filling you up, and then expanding to protect you in a bubble if you like. You can finish by stating that your energy is cleared and saying your name 3 times.

Grounding Techniques

Grounding and coming back to centre also go hand in hand with energy cleansing- after we have cleared away anything that does not belong to us, we want to come back home to ourselves and our own energy- otherwise we will simply fill back up with somebody else’s! Nature loves a vacuum after all.

While most of the options listed above are also grounding to a level, here are some additional options:

How to Ground Yourself

1. Breath - Breathing is the fastest and most powerful way to come back to centre and ground. Breathe deeply and slowly into the belly as an easy way to feel rooted, in through the nose and out through the mouth or the nose, you can try a combination of both. If you can, deep breaths of 6 counts is good. This is also a good way to stop the mind spiralling and return to yourself and the present moment if it is this that causes you to be ungrounded.

2. Mindfulness - Becoming really present with your physical body, the art of embodiment, is hands down the most powerful way to remain centred and grounded throughout the day and get less thrown off by others’ energy. In having a strong connection to your body, you can increase your intuition and strengthen your auric field, innately sensing when the balance has gone off kilter and then you can do one of your practices to come back to centre before you get too depleted! Regularly notice how the surface feels beneath you, how the fabric and air feel on your skin, how the air feels in your nostrils and belly. Become aware of the sounds around you, of your heartbeat, of any smells. Really pay attention to the space around you and all the details, notice the quality of your breaths, if they are long or short, and your current emotional state. For this reason, yin yoga is also wonderful.

3. Boundaries - The best cure is prevention. If you often find yourself ungrounded or energetically depleted, become aware of what causes these situations in the first place. There’s no point having to perform a protection spell every day when a simple conversation about your boundaries will do! Know your limits and stick to them, get to know yourself really intimately and what works and what doesn’t for you, what you can handle and what you can’t, and what you need to feel energetically refreshed and vibrant. In noticing when you feel unbalanced you can more easily work to remediate and prevent it from happening in the first place! Only you can advocate for yourself. Sometimes a simple grounding exercise is just spending more time with a soothing loved one or pet (or saying no to others).

4. EFT Tapping - This is a simple technique based on the Traditional Chinese Medicine meridian system and Neurolinguistic programming. You tap along energetic centres along the body as you say affirmations to help ground and soothe (I have video examples of this in my Energy Cleansing Workshop and Spirit Subscription below).
