Visiting a Balinese Palm Reader

Bali is known for its healing magic, and one of the most unique experiences you can do is to visit a Balinese palm reader. There are also many other famous Balinese healers, here are some of the most popular:

1. Agus Sihman - The Bali palm reader who we went to and loved.

2. Cokorda Rai - A popular healer in Bali but is rumoured to have now retired.

3. Ibu Jero -  A Balinese high priestess and descendant of five healers before her (she draws bad energy out of you and burps it out)! This was my least favourite experience.

4. Pak Man (Arya Dunung) - He uses therapeutic massage and his own crafted oils and medicines to heal the body.

5. Tunjung - She’s skilled in Pranic Healing, Cranio Sacral Therapy, Chakra Balancing, Medical Intuition, and Psychic Surgery. Plus tarot, Crystal Ball and Psychic Body Reading. I loved her!

You may have also heard about Ketut Liyer, the famous healer featured in “Eat, Pray, Love”, but sadly he has passed away. You can also come across a real healer in Bali through word of mouth if you have local friends!

If you do decide to go with another healer, be aware that often you will simply have to turn up and wait your turn, which could be hours. It could also be in a public room (even though sensitive information might be whispered to you). We’ve heard that turning up around lunchtime can result in shorter queues however!

What To Know Before Going To A Bali Healer

Our main tip before visiting a healer in Bali would be to keep an open mind, be ready for anything, go with the flow, be present, and enjoy the moment!

We weren’t at all sure what to expect before going, but overall it’s a lovely, calming, reinforcing, and grounding experience.

After all, they’re not called HEALER for nothing, right? One of their central roles is to soothe and reassure you, i.e. help “heal” what’s been ailing you. Any good healer will give you a sense of security and trust in your life, and also maybe the push you’ve been needing to start something or stop worrying about something else. You don’t have to go in with a specific question in mind but you can if you want to.

What Happens In A Palm Reading Session

We drove for around 40mins from the centre of Ubud to visit Agus for our pre-set appointments (we were in a group of 4).

We arrived at his little yellow house which is adorably decorated in his internal courtyard with colourful scarves, loads of plants, water features, and a lot of incense. We filled in our names, country of origin, and dates of birth, and then went in one at a time to a private room to see him.

Our sessions lasted half an hour each and there’s a bathroom for you to use in the meantime, and drinking water available (although we didn’t explore the surrounding area, there didn’t seem to be much around as it was very residential).

Once in the room, he starts by taking your hand, closing his eyes and uttering prayers.

After that, he takes out a magnifying glass and begins to study your palm. He starts by giving you an detailed outline of your character. The details he gave were so specific that not a single thing could have been repeated for each of the others.

Then, he begins to list some of the things you may have been struggling with, this is probably when all of us started crying, it was very therapeutic.

Finally, through many examples of his own life, general “bigger picture'“ thinking, coupled with the wisdom age and experience-acquired insights, he calms and soothes your worries by putting everything into perspective, and, somehow, with his incredibly serene and enlightened manner, manages to make any anxieties completely disappear completely.

All of us came away from the experience with such a newfound sense of lightness, replenishment and weight lifted from our psyche.

So that’s our experience with a palm reader and what to know before visiting a Bali healer. Overall, this is a wonderful Bali experience, and one that we would definitely recommend everyone to try!

I’d love to know how your experience with a palm reader or Bali healer went if you’ve ever been- let us know about it in the comments section below!
