Strategies from the Page of Swords

The Page of Swords court card initiates us in a new mini-cycle in the realm of the mind. Here, we are learning how to wield our sword with expertise and mental agility.

We have gone through the trials and tribulations of the spiky Swords, from Ace to Ten, and now we are tasked with becoming an apprentice again. Not completely starting from scratch, we have gained a lot of experience, wisdom, knowledge, and insight throughout this journey, but now we are called to refine it.

Page of Swords Tarot Meanings

The Page of Swords Minor Arcana card sis that zesty eagerness we experience when we are learning something new and have freshly discovered a topic that sparks our interest. Think the overzealous yogi, vegan, crypto bro, or any other group that has passion (and opinions!) behind it.

As a Page, we have not yet fully mastered this realm of mind and speech. It is an invitation to harness our thoughts and words, but sometimes can come out cutting or bluntly.

This naïveté is reflected in the Pamela Smith Rider Waite Tarot deck, and many other Tarot decks based off it, we can see a young Page holding a sword that is larger than the card!

We still need experience and fine-tuning before we move up the ranks to Knight or sovereignty of the monarchs.

The clouds behind them are grey and rising higher, the wind is blowing and there are many birds swirling their head. They look left to the past for insight while the sword is nudging them right towards the future.

When this card shows up for us, we are invited to pay attention to our thought patterns and how we communicate, yes follow our excitement and curiosity, but also be mindful of how this might come across to others (especially those with more experience than us)!

Page of Swords Upright Keywords

News, messages, insight, mental excitement, curiosity, interests, eager communication, cutting words.

Generally, an upright Page of Swords is an invitation to follow what piques our attention and follow those threads. Notice the quality of the mind and our internal chatter, and how we relay our opinions to others in return. Ask those questions and share your insight, but be mindful of a sharp tongue!

Astrology of the Page of Swords

Astrologically, the Pages represent their elemental counterparts. In this case, the Air Signs: Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius. The Air element is airy, obviously; vast, expansive, and intellectual. It is light, ephemeral and hard to pin down. Invigorating and social, a bridger of gaps, communicator, and heady.

We may be more mentally flexible, as with Gemini— Mutable Air; or an initiator of ideas, opinions, and proposals such as with Cardinal Air Libra; or more with more conviction in our knowledge such as with the staying power of Fixed Air Aquarius.

Additionally, the Pages are also considered to be associated Earth according to some, as they are closest to the ground in their figurative growth, the seeds being planted (which is what I tend to go with).

Thus, the Page of Swords is Earth of Air. These two don’t appear to have much in common at first sigh, earth is grounded, nourishing, and heavy; air is flighty, weightless, and dynamic. However, these are two crucial ingredients for seeds to flourish.

Numerology of the Page of Swords

Numerologically, the Pages can correspond to the number 11, a powerful “master number” not usually reduced. Although this would connect it to the Major Arcana Justice card, the courts are not usually associated numerologically as they hold their own special position in the Tarot.

Having said that, I do like the concept of the Pages being associated with master number 11 because the seed is the most powerful, it contains the imprint of the mighty oak. As humans with ovaries are already born with all the eggs they will have in their lifetimes; when you are pregnant, within your belly you hold not only all your child’s eggs should they also have ovaries, but also all your grandchildren’s!

If you were to reduce them, this would give us 2, card of the High Priestess. I also appreciate this association because sometimes beginner’s mindset is the most enlightening!

In the Thoth Tarot, the Pages are called Princesses and seen as uniquely powerful because as they are on the lowest branch (Sefirot) of the Tree of Life (Malkuth), thus cyclically closest to the highest sphere (Kether) once the cycle is repeated.

How to Read Court Cards

Generally, the courts are said to either represent a person, situation, or facet of self. This can be someone who is influencing the question at hand, the general energy of the current situation, or an inner archetype you are invited to call upon.

As another person, this could be someone young, eager, and excitable with mental energy to spare. Often, this can also simply be someone who brings news or a message in relation to Swords things (ideas, visions, mindsets).

As a situation, the Page of Swords can represent a quick, fast-paced environment where news and information is coming at you a-mile-a-minute. You may be learning something new, literally going back to school, doing lots of reading, or simply find something that captures your interest.

As a facet of self, this can represent those moments when we are brimming with ideas and keen to share them with the world. We may also blurt things out without thinking, or be overly-direct with the way we say something. Either way, it can be an invitation to write down any flashes of insight that come to you, follow your research rabbit holes, and be mindful of how you speak to others!

Reversed Page of Swords

If you choose to read reversals, a Page of Swords reversed can be an even stronger message to be mindful of how you express yourself, a bit of humble pie may be in order! Vet through anything you read or hear as there may be some mental confusion or mind games, and don’t let your mind run away with you! Perhaps you are having learning difficulties with something new, don’t get frustrated— there is no rush.

Page of Swords in a Relationship Reading

As with all Tarot cards, the true nature will depend on the context of the situation, the question asked, where in the spread it has fallen, the surrounding cards, and your intuition. But in general, in love Tarot readings sometimes the Page of Swords represents either you or your partner speaking in harsher tones than necessary; or it can also reflect a generally intellectually-oriented relationship, as well as an invitation to pay attention to messages from others surrounding it.

Page of Swords in a Career Reading

In a career reading, the Page of Swords can be an invitation to learn something new, take a course to deepen an interest, or follow new ideas and perspectives. It can also be a message to be mindful of how you communicate with others, as well as reminder to pay attention to messages and insight coming to you. A new window of opportunity may be worth your time.
